VARIETY DEVELOPMENT

Program Leader - Dr Paul Taylor

This program involves research to improve the yield, adaptability, disease resistance and product quality of temperate cereals, grain legumes and oilseeds. The program will provide breeders with a new source of genetic variation to improve the germplasm resource base of Australian temperate field crops and new information on the inheritance of commercially important characters.

Research in the program is linked directly to conventional breeding programs undertaken in Agriculture Victoria.

Current strategic directions include germplasm development, genetic transformation and the development and application of molecular markers.

Vision for Variety Development Program of the JCCI A vision for the program is to complement the advances being made in conventional breeding with the implementation of innovative biotechnology techniques to produce new elite pulse, oilseed and cereal varieties. These techniques will include the use of gene technology through the development and application of genetic engineering; marker assisted selection through the development of molecular markers and mapping to identify genes controlling important agronomic and disease resistance traits; and the development of double haploid systems for the pulses. This vision will be implemented by: · Providing scientific leadership of the program in consultation with industry, DNRE program leaders, and the Director of the JCCI. · Assisting in the identification and development of new projects through consultation and Plant Breeders needs-analysis workshops. · Assisting in the submission of project proposals to funding agencies. · Encouraging and promoting postgraduate involvement in research and breeding activities, and in the JCCI Symposium.
