Project Overview and Outcomes

Project Summary

To design and commission of an Australian Grains Free Air Carbon Dioxide (AGFACE) Array consisting of a core FACE system at Horsham (stage 1) supplemented by one smaller system located at Walpeup (stage 2), and then develop additional sites across Australia (stage 3).  This facility will generate data sets on the performance of wheat under elevated atmospheric CO2 levels that will be provided to modellers.

Through establishment of a AGFACE array with an initial focus on wheat based systems to –

Provide an adequate validation data set to allow modeling of wheat quality and yield resulting from interactions among N, CO2, water and temperature in possible future climates of the Southern Australian grain cropping zone.

Provide a resource for diverse monitoring and experimentation in wheat crops grown in potential future environments.

Output 1:

An operational research facility of eight large CO2 enrichment rings and eight control areas at Horsham (2007), plus one satellite site with six to 8 4 m rings at Walpeup (2008).

Output 2:

Proposals for the establishment of at least two additional satellite locations each of 6 * 4 m rings developed with new partners.

Output 3:

Data sets on the response of wheat crops to elevated CO2 levels provided to crop modelers.
